Schedule for the Christmas Bird Count Jan, 2008

While no, we probably won’t see Carmine Bee Eaters on this year’s count, but a good eye and ID skills are still what we need. CBC compiler Liz Hailman is assembling teams for AoMC’s ‘Stuart Count’, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5th. Holiday chaos will be over by then, and we’re always interested in having experienced birders to participate in this one-day event. To volunteer, contact Liz at 561-746-7293. A pre-count orientation meeting will be held on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 5th. about CBC

Results of the Christmas Bird Count of Dec. 30, 2006

For those of you who participated in the 2007 Christmas Count, thank you very much for helping us. To those who were in previous counts, I hope you will be able to join us another year. We had 19 parties with 72 participants, and covered all but one area and some of the gated communities. The total number of species is 118, as compared with 114 last year, not a significant difference.

Here are some of the best finds of our count on Dec. 30, 2006, not reported last year, and seen on fewer than half of Stuart's 43 counts:

There was 1 Roseate Spoonbill seen by Greg Kaufman's party in the Savannas.

A Marsh Wren was seen by Phillip Kline in Liz Albertson's area in Jensen Beach and the Savannas.

Jack Hailman's party picked up 5 Piping Plovers and 50 American Widgeon.

Cedar Waxwings have reappeared on the scene, with over 200 seen by 4 parties.

In striking numbers were American Robins (over 3000, vs. 81 last year) and Tree Swallows (about 2700, 10 times more than last year.

Again, thanks for participating and I hope you will be able to do it again next year. - Liz Elizabeth D. Hailman Compiler, Stuart Christmas Bird Count ehailman@wisc.edu
