Audubon Of Martin County's Birdathon Blast

Friday, April 8, 2011 6:00 am to Saturday, April 9, 2011 6:00 pm

Please keep April 8 to April 9, 2011 open on your calendars! We would appreciate your participation in Audubon of Martin County's first Birdathon Blast. This will be our last field trip and we encourage all to participate. We will use this event both as a fundraiser and as a fun educational experience.

We request that all who participate seek pledges from friends, family, neighbors and yourself. Pledges can be donated either as a set amount or per number of bird species counted during our given time frame. Identifying birds by call or song is of course acceptable. We will start at 6:00 am on Friday, April 8, 2011 and end at 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

We plan on organizing the Birdathoners into teams of two-four. Each team will have a trip leader. Teams may be comprised of four friends who wish to bird together (just let us know who you would like to be included in your team). If you sign up as an individual we will then pair you with a team. We plan on placing novice/beginner participants with more advanced birders so it can be a fun learning experience for all. Teams may bird for as long as they like, i.e., several hours, all day, one day or both days. Teams may bird via hiking, biking, car or boat. It will be up to the teams to decide on the way they wish to travel. Teams will be free to bird anywhere within the state of Florida. For those teams wishing to bird locally, we will be delighted to provide suggestions for birding locations and boundaries within Martin County. Backyard birding is an option for those unable to travel. The goal is to count as many species as possible, not number of birds per species. More information.

We are looking for birders who will act as team leaders. These folks should have fairly good identification skills and be willing to help the less experienced birders recognize each species. The team leader will also be responsible for providing us with each member's pledge sheet, total number of species seen, names of all species seen and most exciting/unexpected bird identified. Please let us know how many miles you drove or whether you hiked or biked. Let us know of any entertaining or unexpected events that occurred while birding.

We will end the Birdathon with a pot luck dinner and pool party to be held Saturday evening (6 pm) at the Schooner Oaks Clubhouse in Rocky Point (maps will be provided). All who participate are invited. Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. Just bring yourself, a dish to share and wine or beer if you prefer. Here we will tally our counts and award prizes for most species counted by a team, most unusual/unique species sighted, lowest carbon footprint, most number of pledges obtained by a team and most cash raised by a team, etc.

Thanks for your involvement. Let's make this a successful fundraiser. Most importantly, let's have fun.
