Bird Island -- Designated Critical Wildlife Area

Tuesday, November 11, 2014

The state of Florida recently designated Bird Island, on the Indian River Lagoon, as a new CWA or Critical Wildlife Area. A rookery for wading and shore birds, access to this island is highly restricted as hundreds of birds use this space for shelter and nesting. Captain Nancy Beaver, of Sunshine Wildlife Tours, provides guided tours to this island. Her next trip with our Audubon chapter is in December. (Photo courtesy of Cara Campbell)
