This is your opportunity to participate in an international birding event!

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a bird count event in which volunteers count all birds within a 15-mile diameter circle and is held annually by the National Audubon Society between December 14 and January 5.  National Audubon Christmas Bird Counts have been held for 118 years.

The Stuart count has been held for over 50 years (with one interruption).  CBC participants, aka counters, will spread out to record every bird of every species within historically specified areas.  For information on the national count results GO TO: http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count.  A brief summary of the genesis and early days of Christmas Bird Counts can be found on the National Audubon Society’s webpage here: http://www.audubon.org/conservation/history-christmas-bird-count.

The person who organizes a count, called the compiler, tallies the results and enters them on a National Audubon Society (NAS) website accessible by the public.  The Stuart CBC, sponsored by Audubon of Martin County, has its center near downtown Stuart and is divided into about 20 areas, and a different party of observers counts birds within each area.  The number and size of each count subset can be adjusted to meet the number of participants.

For a summary of all the 2016-2017 Florida counts, by our state compiler, Bill Pranty, GOTO: http://netapp.audubon.org/CBCObservation/Historical/ResultsByCount.  You will find each count listed by its individual name in alphabetical order.
