Discover the Florida Shorebird Alliance

 
Learn about the challenges shorebirds and seabirds face in Florida and the dedicated organizations throughout the state diligently working to protect Florida's amazing diversity of shorebirds and seabirds.

Speaker Natasha Warraich, Assistant Regional Biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, works with threatened and imperiled terrestrial species throughout South Florida. Ms. Warraich previously worked with sea turtles at Florida Atlantic University’s Marine Research Lab at the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex and worked for the Florida Park Service as a Park Services Specialist at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. She holds a Master’s in Environmental Sciences from Florida Atlantic University.

Birding at Lakeside Ranch STA

 
Take a guided tour of the 2600 acre Lakeside Ranch STA (Stormwater Treatment Area). The birding tour offers everyone an opportunity to see dozens of species of birds in an environment that is unique to this area. Managed by the South Florida Water Management District, public access is managed by Audubon of Martin County. It's a great opportunity to learn how to identify birds from our expert birding guides.
 
LOCATION: The Lakeside Ranch STA
                    9400 SE 126th Blvd. (Route 15B)
                    Okeechobee, FL

TIME: 8:00 am to 11:00 am
 
DIRECTIONS: From I-95, take Route 714 west, turn right on Route 710, go 1/4 mile and turn left turn on Route 15B. The Lakeside Ranch STA is immediately after the milk production plant on the left.
 
WHAT TO BRING: Binoculars, spotting scopes, sun block, reference books, water and snacks, cameras, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunglasses and protective wear.

Stuart Christmas Bird Count

 
The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a bird count event in which volunteers count all birds within a 15 mile diameter circle and is held annually by the National Audubon Society between December 14 and January 5. National Audubon Christmas Bird Counts have been held for 119 years.
 
The Stuart count has been held for over 50 years (with one interruption). CBC participants, aka counters, will spread out to record every bird of every species within historically specified areas.
 
Visiting birders are invited and encouraged to participate. Count area sections and subsections are selected and assigned at the December 3rd pre-count meeting.
