3 Questions for Carly
Q: What drew you to want to work with Audubon of Martin County?
A: After graduating from Stetson University with a Bachelors in Environmental Science and Marketing, I traveled 2,000 miles west to Wyoming with my American Quarter Horse - Bear. During my three months on the road, I saw America's bounty while riding through miles of wilderness, just my companion Bear and I. Upon returning home, I was alarmed at some of the things I saw happening to Martin County's natural environment. I fought hopelessness一ultimately deciding that I too could make a difference. Getting to work at Audubon of Martin County is my way of contributing to the success of arguably one of the most important biological monitors, birds.
Q: On that note, what's your favorite bird and why?
A: I took a class my sophomore year of college called "Nature Writing" with Dr. Mary Pollock, who inevitably became my favorite professor over the next years. She took us to different natural areas such as Blue Springs State Park and Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge to practice various sorts of stylistic writing. One day we were asked to read Susan Cerulean's "Looking after God's Birds" and ever since then it seems as though I only see a Swallowtail Kite flying overhead when I'm about to go through a big life change. They have become a bit of a positive omen for me, and I savor the moments they glide into view.
Q: What are you looking forward to in your role as community director?
A: I'm looking forward to several different things here at Audubon, including working with volunteers on ecological projects and forming a youth committee for local high schoolers! If you are interested in getting involved with Audubon of Martin County, please contact me at!
